Founded in 1999 by Mr Tay King Huak, The Original Sembawang White Beehoon has since become an iconic dish unique to Singapore, alongside the famed Hainanese Chicken Rice, Chilli Crab and Kaya Toast. This unassuming home-grown dish was relatively unknown when it was first served from a small stall in the since-demolished Old Chong Pang Market till we moved to the current location at Jln Tampang in 2000. It was here where the dish gained its popularity, so much so that most customers simply referred to us as White Beehoon instead of the original restaurant name – You Huak Restaurant.

The group expanded when the helm was passed to his now 38-year-old son, Mr Tay You Xian in 2015. Under his leadership, we rebranded as White Restaurant, grew from strength to strength and spawned from a 30-seater coffee shop unit with just five staff, to having five full-fledged restaurants, a central kitchen and staff strength of 150 to support our outlets in the daily operations today.

This year, the group celebrate its 20th anniversary with the opening of their flagship outlet at Jewel Changi Airport – a first step in creating an international presence while continuing to grow the presence in the local food and beverage scene with a sixth outlet slated to open in Q4.

The budding of similar White Beehoon dishes from fellow F&B operators is equally flattering and worrying. While we are flattered to know that our signature White Beehoon dish is well-loved, we are concerned that the misconception of taste will form with other operators labelling their business as White Beehoon with sub-par quality.

As such, White Restaurant will continue to expand and campaign The Original White Beehoon as the flag bearer of this uniquely Singaporean dish locally and within the region, while ensuring the food and service standards are up to par.
